MM Torque-arm

Rear Lower Control Arm Recommendations:
To get the best performance from your free-moving Torque-arm suspension system, you need rear lower control arms that don't cause suspension bind. Suspension bind keeps the rear axle from moving freely. When there is any suspension movement, the control arms not only pivot about their mounting bolts, they also move sideways in an angular motion. If that angular motion is restricted because of a poor bushing design, the suspension will bind up (not want to move). That binding increases the wheel rate, which in turn causes unpredictable performance as well as increased stress on the torque boxes. Bind is prevented by using rear lower control arm bushings that allow a slight sideways angular deflection. Control arm designs that do not allow enough deflection include those with hard urethane bushings at both ends, or have solid metal bushings or Delrin bushings at either one or both ends.

Panhard Bar Requirements:

Your car must have a sturdy Panhard Bar installed before installing the Maximum Motorsports Torque-arm. It is your responsibility to determine the suitability of any Panhard Bar other than ours. We will not be held responsible for the consequences if you do not use a strong enough Panhard Bar.

Subframe Connector Requirements:
Your car must have suitable welded in Subframe Connectors installed before installing the Maximum Motorsports Torque-arm. Bolt-on connectors do not attach securely enough to the chassis. The following minimum dimensions must be met to make sure your subframe connectors are strong enough to support the load from the MM Torque-arm.

Subframe ConnectorsMinimum Required Dimensions
Rectangular connectors 1" X 2" X .120" wall
Rectangular connectors 1-1/4" X 2" X .083" wall
Rectangular connectors 1-1/2" X 1-1/2" X .083" wall
Round connectors 1 1/2" X .120" wall

MMTA-1&2 Exhaust Requirements:

  • Some aftermarket H-pipes position the crossover tube closer to the rear of the car than the stock H-pipe. If you are unfortunate enough to have one of these H-pipes, the crossover tube will have to be cut out and moved forward to provide clearance for the Torque-arm Crossmember. It is best to have this modification performed by a competent muffler shop before attempting the installation.
  •
You will probably have interference problems if your cross-over tube is located closer than 2.0" to the front of the flange (see photo below).

  • Due to the larger structure of the Heavy Duty Crossmember, installation will require some exhaust modifications. The exhaust tubes will clear the crossmember, but the flanges need to be moved rearwards several inches. A muffler shop can do this work in less than an hour. Refer to the photo below. The junction between the rear of the H-pipe and the muffler pipe on the drivers side of the car, needs to be moved rearward approximately 3" (A). The junction between the rear of the H-pipe and the muffler pipe on the passengers side of the car, needs to be moved rearward approximately 5" (B).

  • It may be necessary to relocate the H-pipe downwards slightly. Ford has a plus or minus 1/2" tolerance in the up and down location of the exhaust system. It must be in the half of the range that puts it farther away from the bottom of the car. This can easily be accomplished by giving a firm tug on the H-pipe while it is disconnected from the mufflers and hanging from the transmission hangers. Make sure that the H-pipe is loosened from the headers to avoid stressing the headers.

  • If you have a Bassani exhaust system, please see page 11 of our consumer instructions for modification techniques.
